From Sketch to Symbol

The underwater world, the forest with the “Tree of Violence” at its centre, revived monuments and bouquets spanning generations – these and other symbols of the post-Soviet space feature in the monumental works of Victoria Lomasko.
Lomasko gained international recognition as a graphic journalist telling stories about socially marginalised groups and protests. Gradually, images from reality transformed into poetic symbols and changed in scale: from sketchbook pages to murals and panels several metres in size.
The pandemic, her involvement in the Belarusian revolution, the war in Ukraine and emigration ultimately made this transformation irreversible. Lomasko believes that in times of historical change, artists must speak not like journalists about specific problems, but like visionaries about a global process.
