Comics are messengers of visibility – through their diverse characters and plots, their painting and drawing techniques, colours, layouts and their stylisations, socio-political discourses on plurality and diversity become visually present. The constant negotiation of representation makes the comic medium a forum with political education and democratic participation on its agenda: it not only makes visual images visible, but also allows readers to read between the signs and between the lines. The panellists will discuss recent comics in which the relationship between hegemonic conditions and forms of (non-) visibility.
The discussion panel is taking place in cooperation with the DFG-funded research project “Queering Jewishness – Jewish Queerness. Discursive Stagings of Gender and ‘Jewish Difference’ in (Audio-)Visual Media”.
