Many European comics in recent years have sought to find new approaches to depicting Africa that differ from ‘classical’, colonial-influenced approaches. In these, Africa represents the culturally uncanny, the antithesis of a European heroism of violence. Today, Africa no longer appears as the utterly Other, yet violence still seems to characterise the continent. In comics, this now often reflects the violence of colonialism or of neo-colonial actors. In comics, Africa has transformed from the absolute Other of Western culture into its abject doppelgänger. The depiction of violence in Africa today seems above all to say something about the nature of Western culture.
