It wasn’t just the 2024 Comic Study that brought it to light: making comics in Germany is a precarious business. A few grants in recent years have given cause for hope, yet cultural funding has been increasingly cut back of late, with disastrous consequences for the German-language comics landscape. We would like to discuss why we can no longer rely on state or institutional models for funding, and to explore possible, perhaps even community-based, alternatives and utopian visions together with the audience.
