Baumschatten

The long shadow of history extends into cultural institutions, but also into subcultures. Joris Bas Backer vividly demonstrates in his latest work that differing perspectives can constantly clash there. “Baumschatten” (Edition Moderne, 2026) is about an oak tree which, like so many others, was planted in honour of Nazi leaders. Dealing with this issue mobilises various groups with highly diverse characters. Questions of guilt and responsibility, social debates, issues of transformation, queer relationships and other aspects intertwine.
