Joris Bas Backer
Born in the Netherlands in 1981, he lives and works as a comic artist and illustrator in Berlin. He lived in Bucharest, New York and Oegstgeest before graduating in Fine Art from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2003 and subsequently moving to Berlin. In 2018, he published the cartoon collection “Familienjuwelen” together with Nettmann. His first graphic novel, “Küsse für Jet” (2020), tells the autofictional story of Jet, who comes of age in the 1990s and explores his gender identity. His short comics were nominated for the Plastieken Plunk (BE, 2021) and the GINCO Award (DE, 2022). In 2026, “Baumschatten” (2026, Edition Moderne) was published; for this work, Joris Bas Backer received the Graphic Novel SchreibZeit grant from the Lower Saxony Foundation in 2024.
