Sonja Hugi was born in Switzerland, where she studied graphic design at the School of Design Bern and Biel before moving to Berlin in 2006. Even as a child, and especially as a teenager, she was passionate about comics and graphic novels. In Berlin, she initially turned her attention to other subjects—she studied history, communication sciences, and public history, and has been working in extracurricular history education for over ten years. 
Some time ago, she recalled the powerful impact of the art form that had so strongly shaped her own understanding of the world and began writing and drawing comics on historical topics based on her research. Since 2018, she has been working on an extensive graphic novel about the history of the German emigration sect “Colonia Dignidad.”
