Franz Suess was born in Linz in 1961 and studied painting and graphics at the University of Art and Design Linz. Suess lives and works in Vienna as an illustrator and is the author and illustrator of graphic novels and picture books. He initially designed postcard comics and published these together with photos and satirical collages on the internet platform Raketa. His first book "1160, Ottakring" was published in 2011 and is set in his Viennese neighbourhood. This was followed by "Isopoda" (2016) and "Paul Zwei" (2019), among others. His first comic, "Diebe und Laien", was published by avant-verlag in 2022. Suess has been honoured for his graphic novels and children's books with the Fumetto Competition Prize, the Austrian Outstanding Artist Award and the Romulus Candea Prize, among others. For his work "Diebe und Laien" he received the ICOM Award for Best Independent Comic in 2023. For his new project "Jakob Neyder", he won the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung prize worth 25,000 euros in 2024. With "Drei oder vier Bagatellen", which will be published by avant-verlag in 2024, he continues his stories about human longings, hopes and abysses.
