Anwar
Mohamed Anwar is an Egyptian-Sudanese political cartoonist and visual artist, currently serving as Creative Director of CORRECTIV.Studio at the German media organization CORRECTIV. With over 15 years of experience in visual journalism, he began his career in Egyptian and Arabic newspapers and magazines. Known simply as “Anwar” in his early work, he emerged as part of a new generation of political artists who found space in Egypt’s independent media landscape in the early 2000s.
The 2011 Arab Spring and Egyptian revolution marked a turning point in his artistic development. His work consistently advocates for social justice, freedom of expression, and equality, often challenging both political Islam and military rule. His cartoons have received international recognition.
Following the decline of political reforms in Egypt, Anwar was arrested in 2019 and later deported because of his work. He relocated to Berlin. There, he co-created the graphic novel Erdogan with Turkish journalist Can Dündar—a visual biography of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the rise of political Islam in modern Türkiye. The book has been translated into seven languages and has received multiple international nominations and awards.
