Franz Suess was born in 1961 in Linz and studied painting and graphic arts at the University of Arts Linz. He lives and works in Vienna as an illustrator and is the author and artist of graphic novels and picture books. He initially created postcard comics, publishing them alongside photographs and satirical collages on the online platform Raketa. His first book, “1160, Ottakring”, was published in 2011 and is set in his Viennese neighbourhood. It was followed by titles such as “Isopoda” (2016) and “Paul Zwei” (2019). With “Diebe und Laien”, his first comic published by avant-verlag appeared in 2022.

Suess has received numerous awards for his graphic novels and children’s books, including the Fumetto Competition Prize, the Austrian Outstanding Artist Award, and the Romulus Candea Prize. For “Diebe und Laien”, he was awarded the ICOM Prize for Best Independent Comic in 2023. With “Drei oder vier Bagatellen”, published in 2024, he continues his exploration of human desires, hopes, and abysses. His graphic novel “Jakob Neyder”, published by avant-verlag in 2025, was awarded the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung Comic Book Prize in 2024.
