In her non-fiction comic “Die kochenden Affen”, Berlin-based artist Tine Steen uses her scientific intuition to recount the cultural history of cooking through a series of short stories, some of which date back four million years. How has cooking shaped our bodies and our social relationships? Who does the cooking? And who gets which cut of the roast? This explores gender relations, the history of science, chemistry, fermentation and, of course, the “manipulation of food” that we now call “cooking”: 25 Stone Age recipes allow us to scrutinise our ancestors’ every move. As well as offering an insight into the artist’s creative process, the exhibition also provides the opportunity to encounter the comic’s key protagonists in life-size form …
