Joann Sfar is certainly one of the most interesting European scenarists and most talented French illustrators. The Frenchman seems to be almost omnipresent - yet he constantly changes genres: fantastic stories, adventures, mystical folklore, artist biographies, autobiographical and heroic fantasy constantly alternate in Sfar's work. Sfar now writes and draws his own series for almost all major French publishers. He counts Sfar among the authors who are renewing the French comic. He is not interested in the perfection of classic models such as Hergé's Ligne Claire, quite the opposite: Sfar is more interested in the personal expression of his drawings, allows for mistakes and seems to be in search of "imperfection". This also applies to the cosmos of characters he creates. Time and again, his characters can be found outside their own series in the albums of another series. In Germany, his works have been published by avant-verlag for 20 years. There are now over 20 publications. Most recently the highly acclaimed "Die Synagoge". In 2010, Sfar made his debut as director of the highly acclaimed feature film "Gainsbourg". This was followed in 2011 by "The Rabbi's Cat", a feature-length animated film. In addition to his work as a director and radio presenter, he still finds more time than ever to draw comic albums. A phenomenon!
