„Gilles der Gauner" tells the story of the Dutch uprising against the Spanish occupiers in the 80-year war (1568 to 1648) with a lot of humor and self-irony, based on the title hero. One small group of resistance fighters stands out in particular: the Geusen. A wild troop of nobles and crooks who made life difficult for the Spanish conquerors wherever they could. Thanks to their unorthodox methods, the Geusen earn themselves a special reputation and are considered invincible ... just like the Gauls made famous by Asterix.

Hanco Kolk and Peter de Wit created a monument to the national heroes in the historical funny series Gilles the Crook (originally Gilles de Geus). Gilles is strong, vain, totally incompetent and pursues the "respectable" profession of highwayman. Through a chain of fortunate and unfortunate circumstances, however, he becomes the leader of a Geuse revolutionary troop. A combination of physical strength, brawling, moral flexibility and insane stupidity, coupled with a great deal of luck, causes the group to stumble from victory to victory. Panini is publishing the complete Gilles the Crook book in three volumes. For the first time in German, enriched with lots of historical facts and information about the publication, the three-parter is a comic-historical work that is fun in the truest sense of the word.
