Tom Fiedler, born in Berlin in 1973, served as a naval officer for 14 years and worked as a consultant in the industry before becoming a self-taught comic artist. When Fiedler accompanied the German delegation to London in 2019 to bid for the Invictus Games (the Olympics for injured and traumatised soldiers), he came up with the idea of incorporating rehabilitation and sports therapy as core ideas of the Invictus Games into a graphic novel. To this end, he accompanied injured and ill soldiers and their family members in therapy for over a year, visited the Invictus Games 2022 in The Hague and held intensive discussions with those affected and their supporters, therapists, doctors and comrades. „Becoming Invictus“ was published by avant-verlag to coincide with the first German Invictus Games in Düsseldorf in September 2023. Tom Fiedler lives and works in Koblenz as a freelance cartoonist, graphic recorder and visual storyteller.
