With “Columbusstraße”, Tobi Dahmen illustrates a family saga in the backdrop of World War II. After the death of his father, he discovers a collection of old family letters and documents. Based on moving contemporary testimonies and through his own research, he reconstructs a chronicle of the German war years in the mirror of his own family history – a captivating examination of Germany’s past and political responsibility. In his exhibition, Tobi Dahmen and curator Jörg Stauvermann presents “Columbusstraße” in various different facets: the diverse strands of the family’s story are organized by the family tree of the protagonists, a historical timeline illustrates the references the narrative makes to the lived experiences, a making-of and a reading sequence guide the story and make the creative process behind it visible. The graphical diagrams are supplemented by photos, documents and sketches from the creation of the volume.
