Steven Appleby – Nothing is Real

Born in England in 1956, Steven Appleby is one of the UK's best-known comic artists. His first comic, "Rockets Passing Overhead", about the character of Captain Star, appeared in various newspapers in 1984 and was followed by further comic strips in numerous publications. In 2022, he was awarded the Max and Moritz Award for Best International Comic for "Dragman" - a mixture of superhero parody, serial killer thriller, science fiction, relationship drama and social criticism - about the unusual superhero August Crimp, who is given superpowers by women's clothes. Crimp is a typical Appleby character: idiosyncratic, charming, lovable. With his sometimes caricaturing and satirical, sometimes philosophical drawings, Appleby creates a universe of bizarre places and actions. His humour is always enchanting. The small retrospective, which was already presented at the Bernsteinzimmer Gallery in Nuremberg in 2023, provides an overview of Steven Appleby's work over the last 40 years.
